Lord Michael Cecil is an Advisory Board Member and Head of the Beijing Office.
Lord Michael is the 6th son of the 6th Marquis of Salisbury and a member of one of England’s most prominent families. His family shares centuries of history with Asia that continues today. Although maintaining strong ties with Europe and the Middle East, Lord Michael lives in Beijing, China.
After leaving school, Lord Michael served as a Lieutenant with the Grenadier Guards. He subsequently embarked on a distinguished career in the news industry as a founder of an independent news company that pioneered on-the-ground coverage of the Afghanistan War and later as a partner in an international press agency that covered major conflicts and insurgencies around the world.
Following this career, Lord Michael joined his brother, Lord Valentine, in the purchase of Wilken Telecommunications Limited, a Kenya-based company with regional interests. During their ownership period, Wilken founded AfSat Communications Limited and Lord Michael was instrumental in growing AfSat into Africa’s leading satellite-based Internet service provider with customers in 26 African countries. AfSat was ultimately sold to MWeb Africa Limited, a subsidiary of JSE-listed Naspers Limited. Wilken also founded the Tracker Security Group which provided vehicle recovery and other security services in Kenya and Uganda which was ultimately sold to private interests.
Since the sale of his Wilken interests, Lord Michael founded a series of companies in the communications sectors in the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Africa. He subsequently moved to China to further various business interests.
Lord Michael is a Graduate of Eton College and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
Lord Michael speaks English and French fluently with strong proficiencies in Mandarin, Spanish and Swahili.
